PROBLEM

While working as a server at a Korean restaurant in Toronto, I noticed that many customers struggled to understand the menu.

Dish names were unfamiliar, and menu information was often unclear. As Korean cuisine often involves multiple customization options, customers needed extra time to decide on additional options, which led to delays and confusion.

This experience led me to explore how UX design could improve menu clarity and support better decision-making.

Challenge

How might we help customers quickly understand unfamiliar Korean dishes and order with confidence?

RESEARCH

While working as a server at a Korean restaurant, I served around 30 tables per shift. I closely observed how customers interacted with the menu and I noticed three key patterns through daily observations for a week.

63%

of customers struggled to decide what to order.

🤔

26%

of customers left food unfinished or requested changes due to mismatched expectations.

🍲

36%

of customers misidentified dishes while placing their orders.

🤷

To better understand these behaviors, I also summarized the most common questions I heard from customers.

Most common questions from customers

Is this spicy?

How big is the portion?

Are there any vegan options?

What’s in this dish?

How do I eat this?

AI ASSISTANCE

Based on my research, I used Claude AI to explore UX structure ideas. Through this process, I gained three key outputs.

💬 Conversational UX Direction
A shift from traditional filter-based navigation to a more intuitive, conversational AI chatbot approach.

⏰ Efficient Content Generation
AI-generated dish descriptions eliminated the need for manual research, allowing faster and more consistent content creation.

📝 Initial High-Fidelity Concept
AI produced an initial high-fidelity concept reflecting key user needs, which I further refined to improve clarity and usability.

SOLUTION

AI-Powered Menu Assistant

Introduced a chat-based assistant to help users explore the menu and receive personalized recommendations in a conversational way.
