Coocup
Coocup is a school project that uses Augmented Reality to make cooking measurements easier. The idea came from my own experience of giving up on baking because measuring ingredients felt complicated, as well as noticing that many international students did not have measuring tools at home.
The challenge was to simplify the cooking process while making it more enjoyable and accessible for users without measuring tools.
My Role
I worked as the product designer, contributing to concept development, branding, UX design, UI design, and AR prototyping.
I collaborated with Ya Deng, who focused on user research. We worked together to identify user needs and turn our findings into an interactive AR measuring experience.
Key Design Decisions
Designing an Easy Way to Measure Volume
The biggest challenge was finding a simple way for users to measure ingredients without traditional measuring tools.
I used a virtual cylinder to make volume easier to understand. By adjusting the cylinder’s height and radius while keeping the total volume constant, users can change its shape to fit different cups while measuring the same amount.
A slider-based UI lets users adjust the cylinder and see the volume update in real time.
No Page Switching, Faster Workflow
Switching between pages while measuring ingredients could interrupt the cooking process.
I kept measurements, color options, and saved records on a single page so users could complete everything without switching screens.
Saved Workflows, Instant Measurements
Manually entering measurements for every ingredient can be time-consuming and lead to mistakes.
I added saved recipes that automatically fill the virtual cylinder with the correct measurements when a recipe is selected, making it faster and easier to measure ingredients.
